What Are Courtesy Vehicles?

Courtesy cars are provided by a dealership to drive temporarily if your own car is being fixed or isn’t drivable. If your car is being serviced, you can drive a courtesy vehicle for the duration of time that it will be at the service center. Once your own car is fixed and ready to be returned to you, you will also need to return the courtesy vehicle back to the dealership.

How to Get a Courtesy Car?

Whenever you schedule your next service appointment, even if it’s something as minor as an oil change, you can ask if there is a courtesy car or loaner car that you can drive. Once you provide proof of insurance and a driver’s license, you’ll most likely be able to obtain a courtesy vehicle. If you purchased a new car at a dealership with an extended warranty, your contract might even require the dealership to give you a loaner car.

If you bought a certified pre-owned vehicle from the dealership, your insurance coverage will most likely still provide coverage for a courtesy car. The service department should be able to double check on your warranty when you make a service appointment.

You also don’t have to worry about insurance coverage when it comes to using a courtesy vehicle because most car insurance policies include coverage for the use of courtesy cars. Sometimes a loaner car is referred to on insurance as a temporary substitute car.
